MLS Semi Final Playoff:New York Red Bulls v LA Galaxy Highlights & Goals

Red Bulls Galaxy highlights

Los Angeles Galaxy earned a 1-0 win in the first leg of their MLS playoff semi-final against the New York Red Bulls on Sunday.

Attacking midfielder Mike Magee scored the only goal in the 15th minute of the match at the Red Bull Arena.

Galaxy's star man David Beckham unlocked the Red Bull defence with a pinpoint pass that freed up Magee inside the penalty area.

The sharp execution baffled New York's defenders, who assumed Magee was in an offside position.

Los Angeles has relied on their defence to grind out results throughout the season and they refused to stray away from that game plan against the Red Bulls.

New York remained aggressive throughout the match but proved unable to force a goal despite several opportunities.

Red Bulls captain Thierry Henry squandered an early chance from just outside the box, with his side-footed shot rolling harmlessly past Los Angeles goalkeeper Josh Saunders and out of play.

New York had further opportunities to equalise but Saunders held firm on each occasion.

Carlos Mendes sent a header sailing over the bar in the 88th minute before Saunders blocked a rebounded shot from Henry.

Frustrations boiled over as a fight broke out shortly after the game.

Galaxy substitute Adam Christman launched a punch at Mendes after Rafael Marquez had thrown the ball at the back of Landon Donovan.

Juninho then followed up by elbowing Stephen Keel in the face.

An MLS spokesperson announced after the match that both Marquez and Juninho received red cards after the game, ruling them out of the return fixture.

Despite trailing on aggregate, Henry remains hopeful New York can turn it around during the second leg in Los Angeles next Thursday.

"I told the guys that we still have 90 minutes to go and let's try to do the same thing that LA did to us," Henry said.

"But it will be difficult."

Fifa's Ku Klux Klan Family Man

Dominica's FA head Patrick John – newly charged in the Fifa bribery inquiry – says the case is a dark "conspiracy". • John's previous conspiracy experience: 1985 – jailed for conspiring with US Ku Klux Klan leaders to depose his successor as Dominica's prime minister. Klan members, who wanted to set up casinos and brothels on the island, were arrested by FBI agents who recovered weapons, dynamite and a Nazi flag. John was pardoned in 1990, became FA head in 1992, was voted out in 2006 accused of "unaccountability", and reinstated in 2008 after "close ally" Jack Warner intervened. He won a new four-year term in June.

Rangers' off-field problems may offer Celtic's Neil Lennon a lifeline

The Celtic manager, Neil Lennon, is under pressure after the 0-0 draw with Hibernian but Rangers' financial problems could lighten his predicament.

Rangers could yet lighten Neil Lennon's predicament. Celtic's manager watched his team fall 12 points behind their title rivals after drawing 0-0 with Hibernian at Celtic Park on Saturday. Rangers had clocked up their latest away victory at Aberdeen earlier in the day.

However, firm focus remains on the off-field matters at Ibrox. If Rangers slide into administration to avert the threat of a potential £49m tax bill – a prospect attracting increasing speculation – the Scottish Premier League will deduct them at least 10 points. That situation could come to a head as early as within the next fortnight.

NSC Minnesota Capture first NASL Championship

The NSC Minnesota Stars won the first North American Soccer League title against the Fort Lauderdale Strikers on a 3-1 aggregate following a 0-0 draw Saturday, October 29th, on a wet Lockhart Stadium.

Being the lowest ranked seed in these playoffs, the NSC Minnesota Stars went through a tough gauntlet of teams to get to this point. They had to go through the third-seeded FC Tampa Bay, the regular season champion Carolina RailHawks, and finally, the Fort Lauderdale Strikers.

The match tonight was tough for both teams. A rainstorm prior to the match caused the field to be very wet, making the ball tough to play with a simple touch or pass.

Throughout the entirety of the match, the Strikers pressed forward trying to get the two equalizing goals to send the match into extra time.

The first chance came early to the Strikers. Gerson Mayen, sent through on goal, had a chance to test the wet conditions. However, those same conditions caused his first touch to be heavy, and send the ball out of bounds for a goal kick.

Shortly after, NSC Minnesota got an attacking free kick in the Strikers half. Luke Mulholland, who was consistently on the ball dictating tempo, play a ball into the box. Untouched, the ball look destined to fall into the back of the net. Matt Glaeser stepped up and dove to his left, putting enough on the ball to send it out of bounds.

The first half ended with the only serious chance for the Fort Lauderdale Strikers. After a resulting corner from a deflected pass, Mike Palacio curled in a cross which found defender Toni Stahl in the back of the box. Stahl got his head on the ball, but it sailed just wide.

The start of the second half continued to see the Strikers press high up and attack. Again, the NSC Minnesota Stars defense communicated well and broke up the Strikers' build up.

The last real chance for the Strikers fell to Mayen. Walter Restrepo dribbled down the right wing and chipped the ball into the box, looking for someone. Mayen, through the Stars defense, got a foot onto the ball, but could not convert.

The rest of the match saw the Strikers pressing forward and playing the ball into the box, but the Stars remained calm. They cleared each ball, kept the attacking movement out of the box, and clinched the first North American Soccer League title.

Wayne Rooney can be England's top player – as long as he isn't picked

It has been a bad month for the talisman. Carlos Tevez is "very much City's talisman" according to John Motson – himself very much the sort of item you might hang from the rear-view mirror to ward off road accidents, and mask the smell of the dog – but has been forced to work his medieval-mugged magic from the stands, while City try to decide whether to send him back to the belltower or not.

Chelsea's André Villas-Boas unrepentant over attack on referee

André Villas-Boas remains unrepentant over his criticism of the referee Chris Foy following Sunday's derby defeat to Queens Park Rangers and will defend his comments in correspondence with the Football Association this week.

The FA contacted Chelsea on Tuesday seeking an explanation for the manager's assertion that Foy and his two assistants lacked consistency in their approaches to the two sides at Loftus Road. Villas-Boas claimed the referee was "very poor", "card happy" and had "lost it" as he sent off Didier Drogba and José Bosingwa and booked seven other Chelsea players in the 1-0 defeat, with only two home players cautioned.

Hearts players still anxiously waiting for last month's salary

First-team players at Hearts are still waiting for delayed monthly salaries after the monies did not appear in their bank accounts on Wednesday.

The lack of wages, which were due in the middle of October, led to a meeting between the Hearts director Sergejus Fedotovas and anxious squad members on Friday. During those talks, Fedotovas expressed hope that salaries would be paid by Wednesday but also warned other bills had to be settled so Saturday's visit of Kilmarnock to Tynecastle could go ahead.
