Crazy End To A Crazy Season for Gallos Blancos

Gallos and Tigres played out a scrappy 90 minutes in Sunday night’s second leg semifinal game in Monterrey and were on the unfortunate end of a strange and disastrous game changing goal.

Talisman Adolfo ‘Bofo’ Bautista missed the game due to an injury and it was evident from the start that Gallos would struggle without his creativity, superb passes and support he provides up front.

Neither team created many clear cut chances in the first half and Liborio Sanchez wasn’t troubled very much in the Gallos goal, that was until just before half time when Manuel Lopez tried to clear a cross in his own box and in trying to send it out for a corner, aimed his header right at the Gallos goal and past an unsuspecting Sanchez.

After watching various replays it became apparent that Lopez was under no pressure to clear and had time to take a touch to fire it up the other end of the pitch. I think it’s safe to say that big match nerves certainly came into play in his blunder.

During the second half Marco Jimenez tripped in his own box and on the way down he clipped the ball with his elbow. The referee wrongly awarded a penalty but Tigres were unable to convert , as the star of the show, Saint Liborio, pulled of another one of his fine saves to deny Tigres from extending their lead.

The final score was one nil to Tigres who now face Santos in the two leg final.

Although everyone involved with the Gallos Blancos was very disappointed at being knocked out in such a manner, we are all extremely pleased with their progress this season and proud to support our local team.

The transfer market is opening soon and I’ll be watching with interest to see who leaves and who the replacements are.

I’ve very much enjoyed the opportunity I’ve been given by NotJustScottishFootball editor Marc Roseblade to bring you news of my adopted city’s team and look forward to sharing my thoughts and observations along with weekly match reports in 2012.

Warmest wishes during the festive season to you and yours from your roving reporter John Linden, in Queretaro, Mexico
