Pirates Begin Season With Win

Galveston Pirate SC kicked off their new season within the newly formed SPSL, with a win against Corpus Christi Fuel.

In a quick phone call with the Pirate head coach Brendan Keyes to get the lowdown on the opening match, Brendan was clearly ecstatic with this win on the road.

After going behind to their hosts, the Galveston side once again called on superstar goal scorer and captain, Roy Hernandez, to put the ball in the back of the net.

With a strong header Roy equalized to make the score 1-1 but his second was a peach after dribbling his way around three defenders before bulleting the ball home to give his side the lead.

The Pirates had many more chances before the end but the Corpus Christi goalkeeper was in outstanding form, making saves that were out of this world according to Pirate coach Brendan.

"The team performance was outstanding and CC Fuel are definitely a class act. They put us under real pressure in the last five minutes and we had to hold on until the final whistle but its a great result and a great way to start this new season."

"The stadium was a magnificent setting for this opening tie and we can now go forward with confidence. We will need to push ourselves to be the very best we can to play against teams of this calibre all season and hopefully we will be challenging for top spot at the end of the season."

Going on, he said,"We have three games on the road before we get a home match which is tough on the players and fans. Today's journey was five hours but it was worth it for the win, the travelling is just part and parcel of this game and if today's match is anything to go by, its going to be a great season for the Pirates."
