After Englands pathetic showing in the World Cup, the debate over whether the EPL should have a mi-winter break has been re-opened.
The break received backing from Fabio Capello and also Sven-Goran Eriksson during his time in charge of the national side.
Aston Villa Martin O’Neill has also given his backing to the initiative.
"There should be a break, it would be fantastic. I believe it would give everyone a lift in January," he said.
He added: “All the English players were really tired at this competition.”
It has also been noted that there are injury levels of up to four times lower in those leagues that implement a break mid-season.
“I genuinely believe the winter break was of great benefit for us." Added O’Neill.
The mid-season break has been of great benefit to O’Neill before, after Celtic, under his rule at the time, reached the Uefa Cup final.
"It gives the players a chance to get away with their families. They feel much better for it. It was so beneficial.
"One of the years when we had the break in Scotland, Celtic went on to reach the Uefa Cup final.”
The debate has been re-opened following England’s disappointing World Cup campaign, which saw them exit the competition in the second round in a 4-1 defeat to Germany.
