RECREATION PARK, ALLOA
24TH JULY 2010
ALBA CUP 1ST ROUND
This was a match that was moved to Alloas ground due to Airdries inability to re-lay artificial turf in time for this tie. Despite having all summer to get the job done, they failed to finish laying the artificial stuff.
Ayr had a good few chances in the first half with Rodgers having an early chance after latching onto a pass from Woodburn but the goalkeeper saved his 12 yard shot.
Rodgers had another chance minutes later but his snapshot flew wide of the mark.
Promoted youth academy player Jonathan Tiffany was booked midway through the half for what looked like a headbutt but escaped with only the yellow.
Ayrs keeper Crawford was soon called into action and had to be alert to save a strongly struck freekick.
5 minutes before the half time whistle, Trouten put Rodgers through but the Airdrie keeper rushed out to make a saving tackle and a minute later ex Airdrie player Trouten, tried his hand at lobbing the keeper but with a cat like leap, knocked it over the bar.
Half time sub Connolly got an early chance after coming on but fired wide, however 6 minutes into the 2nd half, Airdrie were given a penalty after their striker appeared to be pulled down and the resulting spotkick was promptly dispatched to give the lanarkshire side the lead.
The second half was mainly one way traffic as Airdrie dominated with Ayr goalie needing to be on his toes having to make save after save, mostly though, from long range.
Ayr tried freshening things up by bringing on 2 more youth players, Roberston and Patterson and with 5 minutes left, Brian Reids men made the breakthrough after some nice play from Trouten and Rodgers.
Ayrs first goal started with an Easton cross being missed by Andy Rodgers' head but the ball ran through to Trouten at the back post who fired in a shot that appeared to deflect off the keepers legs and deflect into the goal and give the fans a moment of exultation as their team had equalized with 5 minutes to go.
However the celebrations were to be completed 3 minutes later as youth player Connolly crossed and was met perfectly by Andy Rodgers who gave Ayr the victory with a powered header.
Ayrs man of the match, Jonathan Tiffany.
Great result for Ayr and they progress to the next round.
